Offbeat Tour to Bengal's Favourite Beach Town

If by any chance Friday is a holiday or any holiday falls on Monday, in that case, the best place to spend the weekend is Digha. When Kolkatans thinks about spending weekend, Digha comes first in mind because Digha considered as a second home for Kolkatans. I think Digha is the most visited weekend place specially for Kolkatans as well as those who lives in the surrounding areas of Kolkata.

In 2008, Digha got a crown of “Best Tourist Spot” of the East. Digha is well connected with Kolkata, takes around 4 hours of journey to reach there. Spending time at seaside resort city with family or loved one, Digha is the best place.

It's a Bike Ride Trip

Kolkata to Digha is almost 200km distance which can easily be covered by your bike by 5-6 hours. We used Glamour Hero Honda 125 cc bike for this trip. NH16 – NH116B roads connects Digha to Kolkata. This lovely road trip takes you from the crowded citylife and leaves you on the national highway. But you should be careful about the speed of your bike. Trust me, it is going to be the best part of your journey as the route presents eye-catching landscape. The best time advised for making your road trip is from September to April. We made our road trip on 1st week of March’2021.

On the way to Digha

Our Itinerary

and

Sightseeing

When we thought about Digha, first thing comes to our mind is a bathing crowd throughout the     beach. Our itinerary is something different.

We left the crowded New Digha beach and headed towards Jhau beach i.e. close to Watch                 tower. The view of the aligned trees close to the beach is very lovely.

UDAYPUR Beach

Long stretches of sea shore at Udaypur beach

If you are a nature lover, looking for a serene beach far away from the hustle bustle of daily life, Udaypur beach is right place for you. This beach is nestled between New Digha and Talsari. We visited Udaypur beach in the afternoon of our 1st day trip. The beach, situated just 3km from the city center has deserted stretches of sea shore where you can roam about. A bike ride is also possible on the sea shore.  Bike ride on sea beach is a heavenly experience for us. You don’t need to be upset if you are not on bike trip because you can rent a bike / scooty to roam around Udaypur beach. We experienced beautiful sunset and found busy fishermen here. Watching sunset is a rewarding experience for us. This place is especially famous for its scenic beauty.

 TALSARI Beach

Ferry service for crossing backwaters to reach Talsari Beach

It is another tranquil beach just 13km from Digha beach town. We went there by bike and road to Talsari is bestowed with spectacular panorama. Talsari beach is one such place that refreshes our minds. This beach has sand dunes. You need to cross backwaters by boat to reach the seashore. The beach encompasses crabs but they are quick runners. As Tarsari beach is fisherman’s paradise there are lots of boats throughout the beaches. Photographers must appreciate this panorama.  Talsari beach is for those who love calm and less crowded beach. During sunset is the best time to visit this beach.

Shankarpur Beach :

Waves swashing against the shore

It’s another uncommon newly developed beach which is almost 17km from Digha beach town. We reached there by bike in the early morning to witness the sunrise. There was not a single tourist at that time. The whole beach was empty. I was astonished at that time. Calming wind, sound of sea wave and breathtaking view of sunrise just fascinated us. It’s a stunning beach of entire eastern coast.

After that we decided to come back, as we had to return Kolkata on that day.

When we headed back to Kolkata, we had explored a new route through the villages of Kanthi, East Midnapore.

Bending roads in the village

The villages are bestowed with richest scenic beauty. Mud huts & cottages, date, palm, coconut trees, cultivation fields, Bheri, Prawn farming ponds are seen inside the village. The long stretched roads, bending here and there, developed by MGNREGA scheme are comfortable for bike ride. We found parallel rows of trees either side of the road. We found it very interesting to learn about rural socio-cultural condition which radiated a totally different vibe of East Midnapore. It has become our memorable road trip.

We entered village route after Contai canal-bypass bridge and meet NH116B near Nachinda Railway Station. All details are available in the YouTube video. Check in our YouTube Channel Trip Mania.
